Drowning is the third leading cause of death from unintentional injury worldwide. Yet, many of these deaths could be prevented through improved maritime search and rescue services, which is why the work of the IMRF is so important.
This organization facilitates cooperation and the exchange of information, research and development, and advice between the various IMRF member organizations around the world (including the SNSM in France and the RNLI in England, for example). It also carries out preventive action through education and public awareness of the importance of safety at sea.
