The International Tiger Project (ITP) is an initiative of Wildlife Conservation International (WCI), a non-profit organization founded in 1998. Initially focused on saving orangutans through “The Orangutan Project,” WCI has expanded its efforts to include other critically endangered species, including Sumatran tigers via The International Tiger Project (ITP).
The ITP is particularly focused on protecting Sumatran tigers , a critically endangered subspecies with fewer than 300 individuals remaining in the wild. These tigers face immediate threats such as poaching, the illegal wildlife trade, and habitat loss. Without urgent action, these majestic cats could disappear forever.
The International Tiger Project supports wildlife protection units that patrol forests to ensure the safety of tigers in their natural habitat. These teams remove snares before they injure or kill tigers and other wildlife, install cameras to monitor poachers, and protect vulnerable tigers. They also collaborate with local communities to promote the protection of tigers, forests, and wildlife.
